I will tell you a sad fact. Hamas was not widely supported by Palestinian Civilians, There are two arms of Hamas, or have been. They have served as a quasi-social service for health and community needs - including infrastructure, etc. They have tried to put that foot forward to gain support from the people. They effectively pushed the PLO Palestinian Liberation Organization into the West Bank and lessened their power. For many Palestinians, their feelings about Hamas could best be described as "Meh"
A recent poll of Palestinians has now shown a positive view of Hamas at 44% Not a majority, but a sizable growth,
Why is this? The simple answer is the bulk of Palestinian civilians that have moved in view to a more favorable position is this:
20,000 conservatively dead
1.9 million displaced and homeless.
People, especially children are food insecure and are likely weeks from reaching the wasting point of malnutrition. In the wasting stage, simply giving the person food is no longer enough. Food has to be monitored in amounts, timing, and types of nutritional value regulated. It by now is a medical condition that requires treatment and not just giving the person food again.
Their Chirches and Masques destroyed. Schools and UN centers attacked, and infrastructure demolished. Some of the people have come to view Hamas as their only hope. The only thing standing between them and Netanahyu's genocide.
I am no fan of Hamas. It is a terrorist organization. But it is hard for me to see Netanyahu as anything but Hamas on steroids. I imagine that makes some of them feel they have no one else they can count on.
Netanyahu is making the mistake of giving Hamas greater support from Palestinians.
