ICC Arrest Warrants Likely
Israeli Actions Have Left No Alternative
According to a Times of Israel article dated today, Amos Harel one of Israel’s leading media experts on military and defense reports that the government is working under the assumption that the ICC’s prosecutor, Karim Khan, may this week issue warrants for the arrest of Netanyahu, Defense Minister Yoav Gallant and IDF Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi. While this action is not at all particularly surprising, the speed with which this is unfolding is catching many off guard. Anyone who doubted this day would come has bought into the Israeli talking points. Meanwhile, the international community have been clear it has recognized the severity of Israel’s inhumanity in the Gaza strip. The actions have been a blueprint for genocide and ethnic cleansing.
According to The Jerusalem Post Israel has instructed its embassies abroad to prepare for a severe backlash.
Israel Democracy Institute Senior Fellow and international legal expert Yuval Shany said they could issue such warrants at this stage in the process. That it is likely that they would issue warrants against Hamas Leadership as well. Those who receive the warrants are expected to surrender themselves to the court. If they do not, avoidance of travel would be critical to avoid extradition. Failing to appear before the court would mean they forfeit their right to appeal the indictment against them.
