Robert’s Court Legacy

It’s not too early to talk about it.

You know the old commercial, “Help I’ve fallen and can’t get up!” That could be the U.S. Supreme Court. There are few instutions that have more drastically declined in stature that this court. Of the three branches of government, the judicial branch was historically the Caddalic of governmental institutions. This, however is no longer the case.

I think back on the day the Chief Justice John Roberts was tapped to lead this court and I have to say I was optomistic. Granted Roberts probably was a wee bit to my right on philosophy. That was okay. As far as court justices go, I feel that pragmatic is a positive trait. I saw Roberts as that. I felt he was a gentlemenly sort of guy and would get along with the other members of the court. More importantly I viewed him as a leader. I thought he would be a quiet leader who would bring the court along — more often together than not. And I believed he was a principaled man that would be a good caretaker for the court’s future public appearance.

That was then and this is today. Lots has changed. For starters I don’t think the majoity even think of Roberts when it comes to the court. It is Justice Clearance Thomas and Justice Samuel Alito that get our attention. They are the shinny flying things we cannot seem to take our eyes off.
