Trump wants to send 30,000 migrants to detention center at Guantánamo Bay

The detention center with a unsavory history is about to get worse

President Trump has signed an executive order psving the way to make a huge detention facility at Guantánamo Bay to hold up to 30,000 immigrants deported from the US. He is anticipating the Pentagon and the Department of Homeland Security to open a center for “detention of the worst criminal illegal aliens ...’’

Trump signed the Laken Riley Act, which mandates the detention of undocumented immigrants charged with theft-related crimes. The language treats charges as sufficient to trigger the placement and it is not quite certain how a finding of not guilty would be handled once they are in the detention facility.

The history of Gitmo is one that evokes strong emotion as it was site for detention of 9–11 prisoners. It’s obscurity has made it a target at times for allegations inmistreatment of prisoners. It’s condition has also been questionable. It has not easily been accessable and so there is a good deal of secrecy that has surrounded it.The idea of housing some 30,000 detainees there would certainly requie great modifican of the grounds.
